Apprenticeship and Before

Apprenticeship and Before

From 2015 to 2017 I was a Live Events Apprentice at 20Twenty Productions CIC, doing anything from planning and managing events, to editing media and running workshops in schools and the office. However, as well as my responsibilities to my apprenticeship, I was also a volunteer technician for their amateur dramatics theatre, managing all of the technical elements from sound to lights. Here are just a few highlights from my time here:

Events

My apprenticeship titled: ‘Planning and promotion for live events’ was a very varied course. Along with 2 other apprentices, we covered aspects like planning and managing live events; from logistics to technical, to promotion and media creation to our events. Throughout my time here I got to plan a lot of my own events, starting out small scale whilst learning essential skills on events like our Mario Kart championship and others at local fairs, to bigger things like music industry networking events and even full shows like The Job-Lot! A taskmaster parody fundraiser. As well as my events experience, I also spent a lot of time working in schools in various capacities. sometimes it would be leading workshops and art takeover days or assisting with the digital aspects, stage and photography elements of various productions and showcases.

Theatre & Tech

Although not technically part of my apprenticeship, I was heavily involved in running the tech for 20Twenty’s theatre performances. My apprenticeship was initially given to me because of my volunteer tech work. Even though I didn’t have a stage or theatre learning module, there were still opportunities to run a stage during work and still continue my volunteer theatre work in the evenings.

During my volunteering, I was managing the sound, lights, rigging and managing the technical team. I was essentially fulfilling the role of a small scale technical manager and designer but as a volunteer technician position. I really enjoyed this role as it’s how I started to gain interest in the industry, as well as starting to branch out and manage my own sound systems and get some of my own equipment.
